- This is a personal blog that I began shortly after I retired in 2009 from my social psychology faculty position at a large Midwestern university. The blog contains stories and reflections (usually by me but not always) about a variety of things past and present, e.g., growing up in Menominee in Michigan’s U.P. with my siblings, Steven, Peter, & Vicki, and our parents Vic & Doris; family life with my wife Katja, son J, daughter-in-law K, grandkids A & L; our doggies; Cincinnati and our Clifton neighborhood; everyday events; and various life interests. I try to inject some humor into most of this. I hope you find it enjoyable.

Here I am with my sweet grandfather, V.A. Sr. V.A. was a pharmacist who owned drugstores in Menominee and Marinette. Very involved with his grandchildren, he made sure that I joined the Washington Grade School basketball team.

Thurs., June 6. D Day, WWII. On this day in 1944 Allied troops invaded the beaches of Normandy, France, the turning point of the war in the European theater. /// Fri., June 14. Flag Day. MENOMINEE COUNTY TREES
Bebb’s Willow was named for Michael Schuck Bebb (1833-1895), a specialist on willows. It’s a small tree, 20 to 30 feet tall with maroonish bark. Their contrasting whitish and brownish stems are carved into canes, lamps, posts, furniture, and candleholders. (wildflower.org)
CINCINNATI POSTCARDS
The Olympic Theater was built at 120 E. 7th St. by John J. Ryan and opened on Sept. 2, 1906, with vaudeville and an animated lantern slide short. Motion pictures began at the Olympic in 1911 with a live orchestra. The Olympic transitioned to burlesque and became known for the home acts of George Burns and Bill Watson. The theater was razed for a parking structure in 1930. (cinema treasures.org)
SUPERHEROES OF THE GOLDEN AGE
The American Crusader first appeared in Thrilling Comics (August 1941). His alter-ego is Professor Archibald (Archie) Masters, an astronomy professor at an East Coast university. Archie, a mousy character, got caught in a room with an atom smasher which blasted him with radiation and gave him various superpowers which he used to fight crime. His enemies included Nazis, mad scientists, and Nazi zombies. (wikipedia)

Worried because they hadn't heard anything for days from the elderly widow next door, the mother says, "Tommy, would you go next door and see how old Mrs. Timberwoods is?" FAMOUS QUARTERBACKS
Johnny Unitas was a ninth-round draft choice of the Pittsburg Steelers in 1995, but he was cut before he ever threw a pass and played semi-pro football for $6 a game. After the season, Baltimore Colts coach Weeb Ewbank signed Johnny for $17,000 as a backup quarterback. He got his chance in the fourth game when the starter was injured and went on to be Baltimore’s starter for the next 17 seasons, accumulating a record seldom matched in NFL history. Unitas passed for 40,239 yards and 290 touchdowns, and his record of at least one touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games stood for more than 50 years. He led Baltimore to four championship titles, was selected NFL Player of the Year three times, and was named to 10 Pro Bowls. Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979, Unitas has consistently been listed as one of the greatest NFL players of all time. (nfl.com; wikipedia)
DOG BREEDS OF THE WORLD
Imported into England centuries ago, the English Cocker Spaniel is one of the oldest spaniels known. The American Kennel Club recognized the English Cocker Spaniel as a separate breed from the American Cocker Spaniel in 1946. They are intelligent and playful dogs, gentle and affection, and excellent with children. (dogbreedinfo.com)
MY WEEK (Mon., 11/4 - Sun., 11/10/24)
I read “The Eventful Month of November” at my writers group and “My Lost Poem” at Advanced Poetry. We voted on Tuesday, and Katja woke me at 3 a.m. to say that everyone had lost. That left me in a funk all week. We had lunches at The Original Pancake House, The Proud Rooster, and Izzie’s Delicatessen. Dissatisfied with my big box hearing aids, I went to an audiology clinic, was tested, and arranged for new hearing aids with the promise that I’d do much better. We watched several good movies that I’d DVR’d: a Pauline Kael documentary; The Sum off All Fars; A Note on a Scandal; and The Lost Leonardo. We saw the African-American photo exhibit at the Taft Museum (“Pose for Beauty”). I worked on a scary Halloween story. We got various items at the Florence Costco, including a big bottle of Old Forester.
